If you’ve looked at social media recently, self-care is a big ‘trend’ at the moment and has been especially popular during the current pandemic. If you haven’t heard of it before, read on to find out what self-care is, and why it’s so important!
What is self-care?
Firstly, what is self-care? It’s important to know what self-care means before learning about how important it is, and essentially, it’s the act of doing something to nourish your body or mind. There are many different forms of self-care, some of which you probably already do without realising it, that go beyond the typical face mask in the bath, watching Netflix type thing. Anything you do which is good for your body, relieves your mind, helps you relax, or prevents future stress all counts as self-care.
Why is it important?
Self-care is important, which is easy to see from all of the campaigns, hashtags and other advertisements for it in the media. You may have seen that it’s important, or noticed it somewhere, but have you ever stopped to think why it’s important?
In our day-to-day lives, we experience great moments of happiness, relief and excitement, but we also deal with stress, frustration and sadness. All of these emotions are normal, and welcome, so it’s important we take care of ourselves so that we’re ready to overcome the challenges we may face every day. Self-care is a one-stop-shop for all of your needs, and it can be relaxing or even productive.
During the practice of self-care, you take a good look at yourself, and your life, and you also take time to do something for yourself. It acts as a short break from the rest of the world and a time just to yourself. There are many benefits to self-care, such as less stress, increased productivity or even learning more about yourself.
How can you practice self-care?
It’s no secret that we’re busy people, and we’re always doing things, being busy with our lives, and that’s completely normal. The important bit is that you still manage to make time for yourself, even if it is short, to check-in and take care. This can be hard to integrate into your routine, so there are many ideas of self-care, such as:
Taking a bath, pampering yourself or applying a face mask – pampering yourself is a great way to feel good and can be really relaxing if you’ve got the time.
Ensuring you get a good night’s sleep – something as simple as leaving yourself time for a healthy night’s sleep can make a big difference to your mood and performance the next day.
Don’t procrastinate – although this may sound counter-intuitive, getting things done as soon as you can (without stress, obviously) will prevent a future situation when you have to complete it in a rush.
Meditation or yoga – meditation and yoga are both spiritual practices which allow you to tap into your body and really help you see how you’re feeling.
Make a cup of tea or coffee – it may sound simple but making yourself a hot drink, or even doing some baking, takes some time out of your day to enjoy your own company.
Play with a pet – if you have a pet, you’ll know how comforting it is to stroke or play with them, and it’s great for them too!
Go for a walk – enjoy the world around you by taking a walk or run to really enrich your senses and get in some exercise at the same time.
